Hey there. Just a quick post to update you on what has been going on with Jayci.
We took Jayci to the hospital last Wednesday as she was coming down with what seemed to be a cold but she couldn't catch her breath. They did x-rays and blood work but nothing showed up so they sent her home with an antibiotic and Ventolin. She was sick through Christmas and didn't seem to be improving so we took her to see her doctor on Monday and he sent us back to the hospital to be admitted. On Tuesday we were moved to the ICU where they continued tests. It finally showed up on an x-ray and CT scan that she does have pneumonia. What Jayci has, to you or I, would be a normal cold or flu, but because Jayci isn't strong enough to cough out the phlegm on her own, it sits in her and then causes an infection. She is on a couple antibiotics by IV, fluids for her dehydration and is receiving physio on her chest and back to help bring up all that bad goop. Currently she is still in the ICU and is improving but we had a pretty stressful couple of days. She had another episode today but she has been bringing up the phlegm, so that is a good thing. We will probably be in for another 2 or 3 days. Oh, Happy New Year!!!!
You know, sometimes it is just so hard to understand and again the question of why? comes into your mind. Not only has Jayci been left paralyzed, she has missed out on so much, and has to work hard to regain her independence, but she also has to deal with getting a minor cold, and the effects that has on her. Just doesn't seem fair sometimes. But, we are keeping our faith and trying to remain positive. We believe in the power of God and that ALL things are possible with him!
We will keep you updated as time permits.
Hope you all have a Happy New Year!

Sorry to hear about your pneumonia and hospitalization, Jayci. Get well soon.
ReplyDeleteWell, Starla, life throws a lot of curve balls and no one knows why. It happens and we're left to deal with it.Everyone that gets hit with a curve ball doesn't think its fair. But those that do, it makes them a stronger person. I know that you wish it had never happened to Jayci. I also know that you wish it doesn't happen to anyone else. Maybe someone else wouldn't be able to handle it. We also know that you are getting stronger at handling the situation. Don't give up on yourself. We haven't given up on Jayci, you, your family, or ALL your supporters.
Find yourself someone to talk to.(other than family)You'll find that talking about your frustrations and situation will help a great deal. Be strong, girl. We all need you.
You have our phone number. Feel free to phone anytime.
When we were up there in Nov. we got the impression that Jayci has the right attitude and friends to see this through. She is a very strong young lady. She'll make it.
Don't be too stubborn to ask for help when you need it. You have a lot of supporters that will gladly help if asked. They don't want to intrude so don't be afraid to ask.
Hang in there, Jayci. We love you lots.
We love you all a whole big bunch.
Your favorite Aunt & Uncle,
Jack & Jacki
Hello All...
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Merry Christmas! Just got caught up on all the news. Ups and downs, highs and lows...You need to keep your faith, just like you said!
Sounds like Christmas was lots of fun and laughs and very busy - when aren't you busy?
New Year's Eve - not quite so much fun but I'm sure you all made the best of it. I hope Jayci made a full recovery from her pneumonia.
Keep strong.
Big hugs and lots of love

Dear Jayci:
ReplyDeleteHoping that all is well with you. I am not sure that you remember me or not. I was one of the many residents that you met while at City Hospital. I am not sure if you know this but I am an assistant prof at the University of Toronto. My area of specialty is neuroprosthesis and spinal cord injury. I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Peckham yesterday (he was our distinguished speaker). He has an amazing program down in the USA. His lab and our lab in Toronto are closely linked and always competing for the rights to call ourselves the best in Northh America. As far as implanted functional electrical stimulation programs he is number one! Some of the results he has had and the sustainability of the results for patients with C5 and C6 injuries is amazing! I know that you and your folks will be amazed. I need you to reply to me at mk.nagai@utoronto.ca ASAP. I asked him about patients similar to you. Please contact me ASAP. I am no longer in SK so you will have to email me and contact me in Toronto ON.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Mary
